After signing a three-year contract extension with the Denver Broncos during free agency, defensive lineman Shelby Harris is poised to start across from Dre’Mont Jones at one of the team’s two defensive end spots this fall.
Harris and Jones have different play styles, but they complement each other well in Denver’s 3-4 defensive front.
“I think it’s funny because me and Dre are opposite players,” Harris said on March 19. “We play two completely different ways, but I think it works out perfectly. Dre is a dog. He has great quickness and great hands.
“He has that want to be great. He wants to be great. I’m confident in Dre. He is going to go out there and keep showing y’all what we already know.”
Jones was selected by the Broncos in the third round of the 2019 NFL draft out of Ohio State. After serving primarily as a rotational defensive lineman as a rookie, Jones was thrust into starting duties last fall after Jurrell Casey went down with a season-ending injury.
Playing in all 16 games (with eight starts), Jones totaled 41 tackles — including seven tackles for losses — 11 quarterback hits, 6.5 sacks and two pass breakups last season. He’ll look to build on those totals in 2021.
