Second season with Pat Shurmur could be big for Broncos QB Drew Lock

July 25, 2021 by Broncos Wire Leave a Comment

For the first time since 2017, quarterback Drew Lock is set enter a football season with the same offensive coordinator he had the previous year.

Pat Shurmur is returning as the Denver Broncos’ play-caller this season, and that could be big news for Lock.

“Without a doubt, without a doubt,” Lock said on June 15. “We had talked multiple times going into the last couple games of the year, and even right after. We had kind of just started to figure each other out. He’s been extremely cooperative with what I say I like or what I say I don’t like. He’s meshed, and we’ve meshed really, really well this offseason and added a couple new things he think might fit the style of game that we play.

“It’s just been a really fun offseason to finally be able to finetune things, get the things we like, maybe talk about some things we’re half-and-half on, and maybe throw that in a couple of the practices, get a couple extra reps on those where we feel really confident going into the year. Yes, to answer your question in a whole is yes, it feels very good to finally be in the same offense for a second time.”

Lock hasn’t had the same offensive coordinators in consecutive seasons since his junior season at Missouri. That year, Lock threw 44 touchdown passes, a then-record in the SEC. He’s probably not going to break NFL records this fall, but Lock should be more comfortable in his second season with Shurmur.

Denver was allowed to have spring practices, the team’s offense is full of talent, and Lock has continuity with Shurmur. There will be no excuses this fall — it’s time for the third-year QB to step up and perform.
