The Denver Broncos will have a chance at a quarterback if they want in the first round. Could Mac Jones be the guy they go after?
With the ninth overall pick, the Denver Broncos are likely in play for the fourth or fifth quarterback taken in the 2021 NFL Draft as the first three picks will likely all be quarterback selections. One of those players that might be available around the time Denver picks is Alabama quarterback Mac Jones.

Why he fits
He might be the safest pick after the first two in Trevor Lawrence and Zach Wilson. The ceiling may be much lower, but right out of the gates Mac Jones will be the most NFL ready quarterback of the remaining top quarterbacks in the 2021 NFL Draft.
Steve Atwater on Broncos Country Tonight this week was feeling pretty good about Mac Jones, putting him ahead of Trey Lance. However, he did put Justin Fields ahead of Jones.
Why he doesn’t fit
The hype machine is insane for Jones. A few key stats that make me personal wary of him in the Top 10 range is that 34% of his throws last season were behind the line of scrimmage and 54% of his yards came after the catch. That means the supreme talent at Alabama did a lot of work for Jones to make him look like he was an elite quarterback.
Looking at his best fit, it would look like the West Coast style offense. A lot of that offense is all about the short timing routes and yards after catch, which would fit perfectly with what Jones excelled in at Alabama. That makes the San Francisco 49ers jump up to the third spot and the rumors swirling about their love of Jones interesting.
I just don’t think Mac Jones is the right guy for Denver. To me, he seems like a middling type starter at the NFL level who will need a lot of help around him to succeed. Kind of like what I thought we’d get from Drew Lock last season, but he ended up being ranked one of the worst quarterbacks in the league instead.
If the Broncos want a quarterback in the Top 10, I would much rather seem them jump up to get either Justin Fields or Trey Lance. The upside with those two is much higher over a guy like Mac Jones.
