Sam Darnold's another example of Broncos being selective in QB search

April 6, 2021 by Broncos Wire Leave a Comment

Denver Broncos general manager George Paton wants to add a quarterback, but he’s not going to add a QB just for the sake of adding a QB and he’s certainly not going to overpay for one. Paton’s decisions this offseason have made that clear.

Paton has spoken with the Carolina Panthers about Teddy Bridgewater but hasn’t made a move, likely in large part because of the QB’s expensive contract. Paton also spoke with the New York Jets about Sam Darnold, but he deemed the QB’s price tag to be too expensive.

Paton also tried to trade for Matthew Stafford earlier this offseason, but the Detroit Lions sent him to the Los Angeles Rams instead. Detroit got two first-round draft picks and a third-round pick for Stafford, a price that proved to be too steep for the Broncos.

Denver hasn’t added a QB yet, but they still have all their draft picks and enough salary cap space to make a move. If Deshaun Watson is cleared, the Broncos will likely still pursue him. If Bridgewater’s contract is restructured, Denver might resume trade talks with Carolina.

The Broncos have been selective in their QB search, but that doesn’t mean they won’t ever add one. For now, Paton’s search continues.
