Tom Brady once told Peter King after coming back down from 28-3 that he has “the answers to the test now” and that “you can’t surprise me on defense,” a tale of a future Hall of Fame QB that’s been there and done that — the same attribution goes to Denver Broncos QB Russell Wilson.
The team held a voluntary minicamp this week and while the coaching staff was busy installing a new scheme on both sides of the ball, including special teams, veteran players that have played in multiple schemes may view the process as tedious. Good thing for those vets, such as Justin Simmons, Wilson is on the team to keep things spicy.
While the offense and defense can’t practice against each other yet, Simmons describes the first three days of minicamp as a “game within the game,” saying, “I love the battle within the battle — the game within the game. He’s back there and he’s really good with his hard counts and his cadence work. For both Kareem [Jackson] and I, that’s really good — and [for] our linebackers. Any time we’re showing things too early, that can it mess up and they can already have a jump on us defensively.
“If we show too late sometimes and we’re late getting back into what we need to get back into, that can hurt us. He does a really good job controlling his pace. Sometimes they get up there and they quick snap. Sometimes they get up there and they hard count a few times. It’s good work for us. You can tell he’s back there analyzing and it’s great. I love that game, so it’s fun.”
The Broncos didn’t have a first-round pick for the NFL draft on Thursday, but the team is excited to have their “draft pick” Mr. Unlimited already in the building.
