REPORT: Pro Bowler “Optimistic” in Contract Talks – 5 Teams Likely to Intervene

April 14, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

courtland sutton contract talks

In recent optimism, the contract talks for wide receiver Courtland Sutton are going well, as the Denver Broncos are close to giving him a new deal. According to a report, the team is making progress to keep their primary wide receiver for a while, which spells good news for quarterback Bo Nix and the offense. Last off-season, Sutton’s contract status was one of the main storylines until the two finally agreed on a temporary deal to keep him for the 2024 campaign. The Broncos were reluctant to give him a new long-term deal, but Sutton was only looking for a “fair” deal.

While the wide receiver market in free agency has been slow, it could pick during this year’s NFL Draft. This might include trades involving wideouts, and the Broncos might be open to trading Sutton if the opportunity arises. They must realize that Sutton isn’t getting any younger and if there is a chance to rebuild, especially for Nix, they will likely take it. It shouldn’t be surprising if the Broncos wind up trading Sutton despite him delivering his second consecutive season of recording over 1,000 receiving yards.

It may seem unlikely for the Broncos to trade Sutton, but you never say never. There have been multiple occasions where contract talks were going in the right direction, and Sutton could be the top of the conversation this NFL Draft.

Possible Next Teams

Los Angeles Chargers

The Los Angeles Chargers should be desperate to find a new wide receiver for quarterback Justin Herbert. The 2025 free agency was a failure of looking for the next capable wideout despite signing Mike Williams for some relief. He’s way past his prime and won’t exceed excellent numbers like 2024 draft pick Ladd McConkey. The Chargers have at least some stability in the receiver room.

Buffalo Bills

Meanwhile, the Bills are in the same spot, too, after losing Mack Hollins to the New England Patriots. The team has yet to have conversations to bring back Amari Cooper, so they may trade for a new wide receiver this offseason as their main WR1. Sutton might find his footing and achieve excellent results with one of the greatest arms in the league of Josh Allen.

New Orleans Saints

Chris Olave may request a trade sooner rather than later, as the Saints are nowhere near being a championship roster. Under Kellen Moore’s wing, this could be a fresh start for Sutton to pair with Rashid Shaheed and veteran Brandin Cooks. While they probably won’t reach a postseason next year, the wide receiver could be the new starter and new focus for this roster if the Saints ship off Olave.

Carolina Panthers

For the Panthers, it’s a worthy discussion to see whether or not they need another wideout. The team might be in good shape with Xavier Legette and Jalen Coker, but with Adam Thielen possibly retiring soon, they should start thinking about the future. Sutton could be their new long-term answer for quarterback Bryce Young’s offense while he still has a lot of years ahead of him and has the experience to relieve Legette and Coker.

Dallas Cowboys

If anyone’s desperate for a wide receiver right now, it’s the Dallas Cowboys. CeeDee Lamb can’t perform the majority of this 2025 season in the aerial attack alone. Sutton is capable of becoming their new No. 2 while Jalen Tolbert continues to develop.
