Ravens, Chiefs May Be Logical Fits for Best Available Safety

July 13, 2024 by Last Word On Pro Football

The Baltimore Ravens and Kansas City Chiefs may be logical fits for the best available safety, Justin Simmons this summer. According to a report, Jamal Adams‘ recent deal may start a domino effect on what type of contract Simmons will receive but there’s no worry. However, Simmons will be watching closely for the next couple of months after Adams signs his new deal with the Titans so it might mean it’s almost his time to sign next. There’s no surprise that many rosters are considering Simmons as the top free agent with the training camp not too far away.

It still shocks many fans that Simmons remains on the market even though there are teams that are generating interest in the Pro Bowler. Several teams could put in a competitive offer and this could be why some rosters haven’t been able to negotiate a contract to what Simmons may be anticipating. Wherever he ends up, he wants to play in this year’s Super Bowl.

“We’re just playing the long game here. I think ultimately we’re going to end up we’re wanted where we’re valued,” Simmons said. “I’ve always said from the jump that I want to play for a contender, and I feel like I can be the missing piece for a lot of teams to put over the hump.”

Simmons is still positive for a playoff contender this season and one of his best options could be the Ravens. The loss of Geno Stone puts the team on a pedestal to find a replacement. However, the Chiefs are looking for some safety help even though they need a replacement for L’Jarius Sneed at cornerback. Kansas City just needs some type of secondary playmaker that can ballhawk and make exploding plays.

Other Potential Destinations

New Orleans Saints

Simmons is already saying that he wants to play with a contender but it doesn’t look like it will be in New Orleans. However, they could be the dark horse NFC team that could shock many fans this upcoming season. The Saints could set their defense up like how the Bears did a couple of years ago when they didn’t have a strong offense. Everyone remembers the games Chicago was able to win in the trenches, it could be the same scenario for the Saints.

However, the team is going to have to get creative about creating some cap space to bring Simmons to pair with Tyrann Mathieu. When you have Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed as your only reliable pass catchers for Derek Carr then something must be done on defense to improve this roster.

Los Angeles Chargers

It’s not the biggest need for the Chargers but the way how their offense is looking, they’re better off bolstering their defense. They’re in a similar scenario to the Saints with Justin Herbert not having a lot of targets since losing Mike Williams and Keenan Allen. Derwin James has been already for a while and it may be time for him to shine through so he may need help opposite of him. Alohi Gilman has big shoes to fill this year but if the Chargers want to relieve some pressure then the logical move would be to move forward and sign Simmons to a one-year deal.

Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys are looking solid at the safety position on paper but one should consider the injuries the team has been enduring. It seems like the same story every year that a major player similar to the Trevon Diggs injury that a player is out for the season. No one reliable with experience is behind Donovan Wilson and Malik Hooker so one more safety playmaker like Simmons would make this secondary scary.
