The NFL will permit players to use more than one helmet starting this season, which will allow teams to feature authentic throwback helmets for the first time since 2013.
Over the last eight seasons, teams have been limited to just one helmet with the same color for every game. That rule limited throwback opportunities. The Broncos improvised with their Color Rush uniform by slapping a throwback logo on their current helmets, but the dark blue just doesn’t have the same feel as the true throwback light blue.
The league now allows teams to use two helmets during the season and the New England Patriots were the first team to announce that they are taking advantage of that new rule by breaking out some classic throwbacks this year.
Will the Denver Broncos follow suit?
That remains to be seen because teams had to inform the NFL last year if they planned to use alternate uniforms this year, and with the team’s ownership situation in flux last year, it’s uncertain if the team made any plans for the 2022 season by last year’s deadline.
Now that the team has a new (pending) ownership group, the Broncos will almost certainly be breaking out throwback uniforms by 2023, if not sooner. And revamped primary uniforms might be on the way, too.
We won’t know for sure if Denver plans to break out throwbacks this season until they announce their uniform schedule. Last year, the Broncos announced their uniform schedule for the 2021 season on July 26.
Based on the way fans (and quarterback Russell Wilson) view the classic throwback look, it seems safe to assume Denver will eventually break out the light blue alternate helmets, it’s just a question of whether that will be in 2022 or 2023. The answer might arrive later this month.
