Packers Projected to Lose Top Star to Retain Talent

February 3, 2026 by Last Word On Pro Football

It might go down as one of the most interesting offseasons for the Green Bay Packers, as the team could release running back Josh Jacobs to retain other talent on its roster. According to Bleacher Report, they predict the Packers may consider the idea of releasing Jacobs during the offseason, which will likely come down to a “toss-up” due to their financial situation. The Packers are already at risk of losing their top weapon at receiver, Romeo Doubs, so the team could be willing to cut Jacobs to make room. However, at the same time, the team does have plenty of wideouts like Matthew Golden and Savion Williams waiting in the wings for a larger role to help Christian Watson and Jayden Reed.

Anything can go down this offseason for Green Bay, but what’s most likely to happen is the Packers cutting Jacobs.

Packers Projected to Lose Top Star Josh Jacobs to Keep Other Talent

The Packers have been in this situation before. While they have other projected cut candidates such as Rashan Gary and Elgton Jenkins, the team may keep them over Jacobs. Green Bay let Aaron Jones go a couple of offseasons ago in favor of Jacobs, and unfortunately for the current starter, the same situation may happen here. This isn’t to say that backup Emanuel Wilson is ready for a full-time role, but he’s cheaper and someone the Packers can afford.

If the team signs a low-stakes free agent running back this offseason, time could be ticking for Jacobs. The 27-year-old has plenty in the tank and is entering the prime of his career after almost eclipsing 1,000 rushing yards, so here are three teams that could target him if he becomes available.

Possible Fits

Kansas City Chiefs

After missing the playoffs for the first time in years, the Kansas City Chiefs should find themselves back in the postseason picture in 2027. The Chiefs have dealt with multiple injuries and legal trouble in their receiving unit, but pending free agent running backs Isiah Pacheco and Kareem Hunt didn’t do enough to retain their job. This means the Chiefs will likely search for a new starting running back, and the team could target Jacobs at least on a one-year deal.

Kansas City also faces a similar cap space situation, but it could find a way to squeeze Jacobs in. Brashard Smith is waiting for a larger role, but the presence of Jacobs won’t be a distraction for this offense that needs a huge overhaul, especially if they lose star tight end Travis Kelce to retirement.

Baltimore Ravens

With John Harbaugh gone, a lot of things can change in Baltimore. This means trades and releases could be happening at the expense of the talent that they have. It doesn’t mean that running back Derrick Henry is in danger, but the Ravens may be looking for their replacement this upcoming draft. Henry is still one of the best downhill runners in the league, but he’s getting too old.

The Ravens will favor Jacobs if they get the opportunity. Jacobs might be an intriguing weapon for the offense’s run game if they want someone who can go for at least six seasons, unlike Henry, who might be running out of gas.

Denver Broncos

Meanwhile, the Broncos have a hole in their running back position. After letting Javonte Williams test the market this past offseason, the team has been leaning on RJ Harvey and Jaleel McLaughlin to help Bo Nix. While Harvey showed some flashes, Jacobs is easily the better option if they want to return to the AFC Championship. Nix will be fully healthy, so Sean Payton should put him in the best position to push the Broncos for a Super Bowl appearance in 2027.
