Five years ago today (Feb. 7, 2016), the Denver Broncos defeated the Carolina Panthers 24-10 in Super Bowl 50.
The Broncos had gone 12-4 in the regular season while the Panthers went 15-1, and Carolina was considered a five-point betting favorite in the Super Bowl. Many national pundits predicted a comfortable win for the Panthers.
Instead, Denver’s defense dominated Carolina’s offense, totaling six sacks, one interception and four fumbles. Broncos outside linebacker Von Miller was named the game’s MVP after recording six tackles, 2.5 sacks and two forced fumbles, one of which was recovered for a Denver touchdown.
On offense, running back C.J. Anderson carried the load for the Broncos, rushing 23 times for 90 yards and one touchdown.
With the victory, Peyton Manning became the first quarterback in NFL history to start and win a Super Bowl with two different teams. Manning had previously won Super Bowl XLI with the Indianapolis Colts in 2007.
