The Denver Broncos selected Oregon quarterback Bo Nix with the 12th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. After the pick was made, ESPN’s Adam Schefter shared an interesting story about Sean Payton.
Schefter revealed that Payton wanted Patrick Mahomes during the 2017 draft. However, the New Orleans Saints just missed out on him since the Kansas City Chiefs leapfrogged them.
Well, Payton apparently likes Nix as much as he liked Mahomes in 2017.
“Sean Payton wanted and intended to draft Patrick Mahomes in the 2017 draft, when he held the 11th overall pick. He was ready to turn in the card. But before he could, the Chiefs traded up to the Bills’ spot at No. 10 and took Mahomes one spot before Payton got him, leaving the Saints to draft Ohio State cornerback Marshon Lattimore,” Schefter said. “Payton feels as strongly about Bo Nix as he did Mahomes.”
Judging by the replies on social media, NFL fans don’t believe that Payton actually thinks Nix is as special of a prospect as Mahomes once was.
“I don’t think I’m going out on a limb here but Bo Nix isn’t Patrick Mahomes,” a fan tweeted.
Another fan said, “I wanted and intended to date Cindy Crawford when I was in high school…and then reality sunk its teeth in.”
“I hope Payton is prepared for waaaaaay more disappointment than he would have gotten with Mahomes,” a third fan said.
“How much did Sean Payton’s agent pay to get Schefter to tweet this? Jesus Christ,” a fourth fan commented.
Nix started his college career at Auburn before transferring to Oregon. In two seasons with the Ducks, he threw for 8,101 yards and 74 touchdowns.
It’ll be interesting to see how Nix performs in Denver with Payton as his head coach.
