NFL had 726 players and staff test positive for COVID-19 during 2020 season

With the Super Bowl now in the league’s rear-view mirror, the NFL has announced COVID-19 testing results for the 2020 season.

Not counting players on reserve, each NFL team had 69 players in 2020 (53 on the active roster and 16 on the practice squad). Spread out across 32 teams, that’s 2,208 players (again, not counting players on reserve).

Among those 2,000-plus players, there were 262 positive tests, according to data released by the NFL. An additional 464 staff members tested positive, for a combined total of 726 confirmed cases during the 2020 season.

The league administered approximately 959,860 tests from Aug. 1 (preseason) to Feb. 6 (the eve of Super Bowl LV). That means the positive test rate for the NFL was about .076% last season.

The Denver Broncos had 23 players, coaches and staff members spend time on COVID-19 lists last season. In Week 12, the Broncos were forced to play without a quarterback after all four of Denver’s QBs were deemed ineligible because of COVID-19 protocols. The Broncos had three games rescheduled last season but no games were canceled.
