Pat Bowlen put his signature mark on the Denver Broncos when he had the team switch from orange jerseys and light blue helmets to blue jerseys and dark blue helmets in 1997, right before the team went on to win back-to-back Super Bowls.
It was a modern look at the time and well-received by fans.
Twenty-five years later, the Broncos are now (soon to be) under new ownership. Bowlen died in 2019 and his club will be sold to a group led by Walmart heir Rob Walton this summer.
It wouldn’t be surprising if Walton wants to put his own mark on the team with new (or at least refreshed) uniforms.
It’s too late to make any changes for the team’s 2022 uniforms, but Denver might consider making changes for the 2023 or 2024 seasons. At the very least, the NFL’s new throwback helmet rules will allow the team to wear a more authentic throwback uniform beginning next year.
The team’s current Color Rush uniform is a mix of the team’s current design and a 1990s throwback style. Some fans have suggested the team should wear white pants with the Color Rush jerseys and a lighter blue helmet to give the team a modern look with a nod to their history.
And many fans — plus quarterback Russell Wilson — are partial to the team’s old “D” logo and throwback uniforms. Wilson won’t have as much say as the new owner, but he might get some input, and Walton would be wise to listen to the request of fans.
With new ownership arriving, now would be a good time for Denver to revamp its uniform, switching back to the classic light blue helmet, perhaps with a revised “D” logo.
The Broncos have a new coach, a new quarterback and a new owner. New uniforms should soon follow.
