Melvin Gordon says Broncos aim to have best RB group in the NFL

July 20, 2021 by Broncos Wire Leave a Comment

Melvin Gordon is returning as the Denver Broncos’ incumbent running back this season, and he will be joined by second-round draft pick Javonte Williams and free agent signee Mike Boone.

Last month, Gordon was asked about his impressions of the team’s new running backs.

“I think they are some good players,” Gordon said on June 15. “We’re competing, but it’s early, and we still have a lot of work to do. I think both of them have really good feet and good hands. I think they’re going to be — we could all be special. We’re definitely going to come out here and compete. [I] can’t wait until training camp with guys flying around.”

Gordon has lofty expectations for the running back room this fall.

“You can tell Boone [has] been in the league for a while, and you can tell that Javonte has potential,” Gordon said. “We’re going to grow as a group, and we’re looking to be the best running back group in the league.”

Playing for the Broncos, Minnesota Vikings and the North Carolina Tar Heels last season, Gordon, Boone and Williams combined to total 2,658 yards from scrimmage and scored 33 touchdowns. Denver might not get quite that level of production from the three backs this season, but it’s reasonable to assume the Broncos could have one of the top RB rotations in the league.
