After joining the Denver Broncos as their new general manager last week, George Paton will soon have to face several tough decisions in his first offseason. In addition to sorting out the team’s quarterback situation, Paton will also have to make decisions on star safety Justin Simmons and future Pro Football Hall of Fame outside linebacker Von Miller.
“George is going to do his work on both of those situations,” Broncos president of football operations John Elway said of Miller and Simmons on Jan. 19. “He has to get acclimated to the new position and the new job and get to know everybody. There’s a lot of different things that are going to go on. Von and Justin are two of the bigger things he’s going to have to address.”
Asked specifically about Simmons during an interview on 104.3 The Fan earlier this week, Paton said “we’re not going to let our good young players go.” Paton will likely make re-signing Simmons a top priority.
Miller is currently under criminal investigation by the Parker Police Department but the nature of the allegations against him is unknown. Paton was asked about Miller’s situation during an interview with KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis on Tuesday.
“I know how much Von means to this football team and to the community,” Paton told Klis. “We’re still gathering information. I’m not totally caught up on that. But Von’s an incredible player, an incredible pillar in the community and we just need to gather more information before we comment.”
