Domes are for the weak.Could a dome wok
While it hasn’t been officially announced, the Walton-Penner group is actively looking to build a new stadium for the Denver Broncos. Recent reports detail how the team’s new owners are buying up land in Denver, presumably to replace Empower Field at Mile High.
Never mind the fact that the Broncos current stadium is just 25-years young, I get that the new owners want to put their mark on the franchise and upgrade the facilities. A little mixed use development and entertainment district like other NFL cities have will probably be a part of the plan.
Time marches on and those of us who still miss the old Mile High will just have to accept the new order of things. However, there is one facet of Denver Broncos fandom that the Walton-Penner’s need to embrace before they ruin it.
The Denver Broncos play outside.
In addition to the altitude, the weather is a cornerstone of Denver Broncos football. The Broncos are a hard-nosed physical team that will take on all challengers in all types of weather. Extreme cold? Doesn’t matter. Snow? Doesn’t matter. Freezing rain? Bring it on.
When the move from old Mile High to then Invesco, complaints surfaced that the stadium catered to the wine and cheese set and not the loud and rowdy fans that gave Mile High its mystique. By putting a roof over the stadium, the mystique further erodes.
Lambeau, Arrowhead, Soldier Field, Gillette… these are all stadiums where the weather plays a big role in the games played there. Empower Field is one of those places. Just think of all the great games in the snow the Broncos have played over the years… Why would you take that away?
I get that ownership wants Super Bowls in Denver. It’s not worth sacrificing a vital part of the Broncos identity to get one.
