It may be time to honor more legends.
It seems that nowadays, every time you turn around, sports franchises are honoring their legends with statues. While the Broncos have honored Ring of Famers with their pillars outside the stadium, there aren’t any statues of our great players.
The first to be honored with a statue at the stadium, with its official unveiling in October 2014, was former owner Pat Bowlen. His statue overlooks Ring of Fame Plaza in front of the stadium. While fitting he has a statue, it’s kind of odd that the first bronze nod came for an owner, rather than a player.
The second to be honored, and rightfully so, was Tim McKernan, famously known as “The Barrel Man.” His statue was unveiled in August 2016 as part of the mini-Mile High (known officially as the Mile High Monument) erected on the site of the old stadium just next door. A fitting tribute to the most legendary of Broncos fans, it’s a crime that the statue isn’t located somewhere in the South Stands.
While there has long been speculation on a John Elway statue, the only nod to The Duke in bronze is the seven mustangs in front of the south stands entrance (and his Ring of Fame pillar). One would think it would be a no-brainer to commission an Elway statue.
There are plenty of players that deserve statues at the stadium. Why the Broncos are more financially discerning when it comes to cast bronze, nobody can speculate. While an owner and a legendary fan are an earnest start, it’s time to honor the legends that actually strapped on a helmet for the city of Denver.
