George Paton hasn't watched enough film to comment on Drew Lock's future

January 19, 2021 by Broncos Wire Leave a Comment

During his introductory press conference on Tuesday, Denver Broncos general manager George Paton was asked what his opinion was of Drew Lock during the 2019 draft process and if the team can win with the young QB moving forward.

“I liked Drew coming out of the draft,” Paton said. “Big arm, athletic, playmaker. I haven’t studied him, I haven’t gotten into a lot of tape — I’ve only been here four days — I’ve watched enough tape to know that he’s talented, he can develop. But I can’t comment on your second question as yet.”

Paton was willing to comment on the QB position in general.

“The quarterback is the most important position in sports,” Paton said. “So if you don’t have stability at quarterback, you’re going to have a hard time sustaining winning … we all want a franchise quarterback. That’s your No. 1 goal, trying to draft and develop or acquire any way you can.”

Lock (6-4, 228 pounds) was selected by the Broncos in the second round of the 2019 NFL draft out of Missouri. He missed the first half of his rookie season with a wrist injury and then emerged as a starter late in the year and showed signs of promise.

Lock completed 64.1% of his passes for 1,020 yards with seven touchdown passes against three interceptions in five games in 2019 and Denver went 4-1 in those contests. Lock seemingly regressed in 2020.

In 13 games last season, Lock only completed 57.34% of his passes for 2,933 yards with 16 touchdown passes against 15 interceptions. Those numbers certainly aren’t as promising as the totals Lock posted as a rookie. The Broncos went 4-9 in games Lock started in 2020.

In his career (18 games), Lock has scored 26 touchdowns and has turned the ball over 22 times. He’ll turn 25 years old in November.
