Garett Bolles on Broncos OC Pat Shurmur: 'He can take us to where we need to be'

January 13, 2021 by Broncos Wire Leave a Comment

The Denver Broncos’ offense had plenty of struggles under Pat Shurmur in 2020, but the offensive coordinator still has the support of head coach Vic Fangio and his players.

Broncos quarterback Drew Lock had made it clear that he is looking forward to working with Shurmur in 2021, marking the first time since 2017 that the young QB has had the same offensive coordinator in consecutive years.

Shurmur has also received public support from left tackle Garett Bolles.

“I feel like Drew is right there to be honest with you,” Bolles said on Jan. 4. “He’s a competitor and he’s going to learn from his mistakes. He’s very similar to what happened to Josh Allen with the Buffalo Bills. It took them a couple years to figure things out, and now he’s balling and took his team to the playoffs. We have to keep our OC around.

“Going from one OC to another, that’s not good for any of us because we’re going through the progression stage of trying to figure out who is going to be here. When we get comfortable with an offense hallway through the year and you start rolling, then all the sudden he leaves, and we have to start all over again. I love Coach Shurmur. I think he can take us to where we need to be. I’m looking forward to the many memories we’re going to have with him.”

Fangio has confirmed that he expects all of the team’s coaches to return in 2021, including Shurmur. Under Shurmur, the Broncos averaged 20.2 points per game in 2020, the fifth-worst total in the NFL. Shurmur will have to improve that stat if he wants to remain in Denver beyond 2021.
