Fan Controlled Football started up last week and quarterback Johnny Manziel is the league’s big-name star.
One lesser-known player in the FCF spent time with the Denver Broncos from 2017-2018. Offensive lineman Jeremiah Poutasi spent the final month of the 2017 season on Denver’s practice squad and then went to training camp with the Broncos in 2018. After failing to make Denver’s 53-man roster that summer, Poutasi has attempted to extend his career in upstart football leagues.
Poutasi played for the Salt Lake Stallions in the Alliance of American Football in 2019 and he was drafted by the Jousters of The Spring League last year. He’s now playing in the new Fan Controlled Football league.
Poutasi was selected by the Wild Aces in the first round of the FCF draft as part of a block of players. The 26-year-old offensive lineman is listed as 6-5 and 344 pounds on the league’s official website.
After winning their season opener, the Wild Aces will face the Beasts in Week 2 on Saturday, Feb. 20 at 6 p.m. MT.
“Fan controlled” means just that — fans call the plays for the games that are live-streamed on Twitch. The league is designed to appeal to video gamers and fantasy football fans.
In 2016, the group behind FCF (then known as Project FANchise) purchased the Colorado Crush, who were competing in the Indoor Football League at the time. Several months later, the group announced its plans to start its own league and abandoned its plan to have fans control the Crush in the IFL.
The Crush haven’t played since 2017. Before the team was shut down, former Broncos linebacker Al Wilson was announced as a co-owner of FANchise and a spokesperson for the Colorado-based team. It’s unclear if Wilson is still affiliated with the group behind the upstart league.
Current and former NFL players Marshawn Lynch, Richard Sherman and Colorado native Austin Ekeler are among the co-owners of the four teams participating in the league’s inaugural season.
