Ex-Broncos TE Jake Butt retires from the NFL

July 29, 2021 by Broncos Wire Leave a Comment

Former Denver Broncos tight end Jake Butt has retired from the NFL after struggling to bounce back from three ACL injuries during his football career.

Butt suffered a pair of torn ACLs while playing at Michigan, including an injury suffered in his final college game in 2016. Those injuries were part of the reason why he fell to the Broncos in the fifth round of the 2017 NFL draft.

Butt spent his entire first NFL season on reserve while recovering in 2017 and then suffered another torn ACL just three games into the 2018 season. Complications from his third ACL injury forced him to also miss all of the 2019 season.

Butt was healthy for five games last year, catching two passes for five yards before suffering a hamstring injury. Denver did not re-sign Butt when he became a free agent in March, and he later signed with the Chicago Bears.

Butt’s career is now over after just eight appearances in four seasons. He caught 10 passes for 90 yards during his time with the Broncos.
