Ex-Broncos QB Tim Tebow retires from baseball

February 18, 2021 by Broncos Wire Leave a Comment

Former Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow has retired from baseball, the New York Mets announced Wednesday.

“I want to thank the Mets, Mr. Alderson, the fans and all my teammates for the chance to be a part of such a great organization,” Tebow said in a statement. “I loved every minute of the journey, but at this time I feel called in other directions.

“I never want to be partially in on anything. I always want to be 100 percent in on whatever I choose. Thank you again for everyone’s support of this awesome journey in baseball, I’ll always cherish my time as a Met. #LGM”

Tebow, 33, won two national championships and a Heisman Trophy with the Florida Gators before being selected by the Broncos in the first round of the 2010 NFL draft. He played two seasons in Denver — and won a playoff game — before being traded to the New York Jets after the Broncos signed Peyton Manning in 2012.

Tebow spent one season in New York before brief stints with the New England Patriots (2013) and Philadelphia Eagles (2015). He had interest from other NFL teams who didn’t want him to play quarterback, but Tebow opted to pursue baseball instead of switching positions in football.

Tebow joined the Mets’ organization in 2016 and he spent three seasons playing minor league baseball (last year’s season was canceled because of COVID-19). In three years, Tebow had batting averages of .223, .299 and .338 with 18 home runs in 287 games.

In addition to working for the SEC Network, Tebow is also heavily involved with his foundation and he has written several children’s books.
