In a recent 2021 NFL offseason preview (subscription required for link), ESPN’s Dan Graziano listed star outside linebacker Von Miller among the Denver Broncos’ potential roster cuts.
Miller has a contract option for the 2021 season. If the Broncos pick up the option, Miller will have a salary cap hit of $22.225 million this season. If Denver declines the option, the team will save $18 million and Miller will become a free agent.
After watching the Houston Texans part ways with defensive lineman J.J. Watt to save $17.5 million, Graziano believes Miller might also be in danger of getting cut this offseason.
Parting ways with Miller isn’t the Broncos’ only option. Denver could restructure the linebacker’s contract or give him an extension and lower his salary cap hit, spreading it out over several years instead of one season.
The Broncos likely won’t pay Miller $22.225 million in 2021, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll be cut. Denver has until March 16 to make a decision on Miller’s contract option.
Miller, who will turn 32 next month, missed the 2020 season with an ankle injury. In 2019, his last healthy season, Miller totaled eight sacks.
