The Denver Broncos made a big splash when they brought in Darren Rizzi as their special teams coordinator last week. Given Rizzi’s high-profile status, it’s no surprise that his title includes more than just special teams duties.
The Broncos officially announced Rizzi as their new special teams coordinator/assistant head coach last Friday. Rizzi previously held associate head coach and assistant head coach titles with the Miami Dolphins and New Orleans Saints, respectively, and he was an interim head coach for half of last season with the Saints.
Rizzi, 54, was a logical choice to replace former special teams coordinator Ben Kotwica, who was fired following the 2024 season. Rizzi will also be replacing Mike Westhoff, who served as assistant head coach in Denver before stepping down due to health concerns last November.
Rizzi now reunites with Broncos head coach Sean Payton, who overlapped with Rizzi in New Orleans from 2019-2021. Rizzi is entering his 17th year coaching in the NFL.
