Happy 2021 everybody, the year Mad Max took place, can’t wait to hunt some cannibals!
I know a breakdown of Lock’s first 16 games has already happened but I’d like to re-look that with stats adjusted for 16 FULL games, discounting Pittsburgh.
Here’s his first full 16 game stats
3,594 yards + 225 rushing
24 TDs (3 of those rushing)
Those yards would place him 10th all time for a rookie, between Jim Kelly and Dak, only four spots below Peyton. Guys I’ll take that any day. I know the box numbers don’t tell the whole story but the only name above him on that list taken outside round 1 is Dak. I think we have a lot more here than we are giving credit for because of our W-L record. And with Drew thats 8-8 during games he’s started and finished (calm down Mase I counted those as team stats!). Here’s another quick fact, the top three QBs for Rookie yards had TD-INTs of 23-18, 21-17, and 22-15 respectively and I don’t think Luck, Newton, or Winston are total busts as rookies. I think we are on the right track, add in some competent clock management against Tennessee and some glue to Juedy’s gloves at we are looking at 9-7 or 10-6. I think we are doing fine, and much better off than we were with anyone else under center in the last few years.
Now take into account that he did that while essentially learning a new system without OTAs midway through his first year. Imagine switching OCs during your bye week. I’ve heard people comparing Lock to Tua, Burrow, and Herbert but that fails to acknowledge that those teams had OC continuity. While the QBs had to learn a new system their teammates were there to help carry them and keep them on the right track. That can’t be discounted.
To sum it up I think we aren’t as bad off as the record shows. Give Lock a proper offseason when he has OTAs to talk to Shurmur about what he does and doesn’t like in the playbook and I think our offense is going to have a new look next year. I’m optimistic even if Elway and Ellis are trying to sink this ship!
Stay healthy everyone, and maybe stock up on Pop tarts and hot pockets, this apocalypse gonna be LIT!
