Is Lock really that bad of an NFL QB and is Mahommes really that good?
To my untrained eye, Lock has a big arm with nice touch and similar arm talent, and similar decision-making.
The biggest difference is that everyone on the Chiefs seems to be schemed wide open more consistently, and Mahommes has benefit of veteran skill position players that make plays when he isn’t perfect; and Chiefs o-line is actually very good.
I feel like Lock or Darnold (or any QB with average intelligence and great physical tools) would be nearly or just as good as Mahommes in that Chiefs offense. If Mahommes were QB for the Broncos, do you guys really think we’d be that much better? Our OCs always seem to be trying to force QB into their offense and make them do more than they’re ready for, whereas most other young successful QBs have had OCs who make it as easy for them as possible and design offense all around them (eg Wentz, Jackson, Murray, Goff); I know that most of those guys have elite tools in 1-2 domains, but some reports imply that McVay was telling Goff the defensive reads pre play, and Wentz is supposedly terrible now, but was a legit MVP candidate a few years ago? Does that make sense? IDK, just seems like outside of Rogers and Wilson, every QB is highly scheme dependent and if you’ve got a guy who’s got special arm talent, they’re going to take time to develop into a dominant player. I contend that Mahommes is fools gold and skews our perception of young QBs…he would be terrible on the Jets (look how pedestrian he looked during games where he was pressured consistently).
I don’t think Lock has better arm talent than Mahommes, but I seriously question the notion that Lock is a total bum (and we should move on from him) and Mahommes is HOF, GOAT level; I just think skill sets are closer than media suggests and lots of QBs would look amazing in the Chiefs offense. Maybe I’m wrong, but same argument with Josh Allen; would he be an MVP candidate on the Broncos or Jets, etc? I think he and Mahommes could be after a few years in an offense, but who knows after you they get hit a hundred times and throw picks bc they’re not on the same page with WRs, etc…Lock has made some great, high level throws on par with the aforementioned (and some
Rookie type boneheaded throws as well), difference is Broncos young receivers don’t make the tough catches and move-the-chain catches and so narrative is Lock sucks; meanwhile Mahommes threw what should’ve been a game-losing pick last week, which was dropped, but hit a wide open WR next play, so his decision-making and QB skill is unparalleled? QBs need time and continuity to be great in NFL; Lock has physical tools to be very good, but any QB we put back there is going to look bad unless our whole offensive scheme gets better and executes consistently, and the traits that take a QBs play to the next level are veteran traits and experience, and consistency.
I also think you guys might be underestimating Lock missing Sutton as a security blanket. Mahommes throws all the risky throws bc he’s never been burned, it always works out; he’s playing with ultimate confidence; Lock is second guessing everything out there bc there’s zero margin to error, and even then our future HOF rookie WR might still drop it and make him look like a bad QB.
Just don’t think Lock is the near dumpster fire Broncos country is suggesting; no QB in the league just shows up and balls out with a ton of help and other guys making him look good, and some time and consistency…am I wrong?
