Broncos WR Jerry Jeudy not satisfied with rookie season, aims to address drops in offseason

February 5, 2021 by Broncos Wire Leave a Comment

In his first NFL season with the Denver Broncos, wide receiver Jerry Jeudy caught 52 passes, totaling 856 receiving yards and scoring three touchdowns. He had the second-best season by a rookie receiver in franchise history, trailing only Eddie Royal, who caught 91 passes for 980 yards and five touchdowns in 2008.

That’s a pretty good debut season, right?

“No,” Jeudy said flatly when asked if he was happy with what he accomplished as a rookie. “Not even going to lie, I’m going to tell you, because I feel like I could be — I hold myself to a high standard. I feel like the standard I played at my rookie year wasn’t the standard I’m used to playing at. I feel like mostly because all those drops. If I hadn’t had those drops, I probably would be satisfied with my season, but having the drops hurt me.”

Jeudy dropped nine passes last year, the second-highest total in the NFL (Diontae Johnson had 10 drops). Jeudy aims to improve that area of his game this offseason.

“There’s things that I can do to fix the drop issue,” Jeudy said. “You know, just focus more on hand-eye coordination drills, the strength in my hands, stuff like that.”

After being selected by the Broncos with the 15th overall pick in last year’s NFL draft, Jeudy signed a four-year, $15,192,974 contract that included an $8,609,436 signing bonus. Jeudy soon made two purchases he had dreamed about since his childhood: a house for his mom and a car for his dad.

“It was very important for me to do that because you know, my mom my dad — [they are] who raised you, who took care of you —  so I wanted to do something to give back to them,” Jeudy said. “Being able to do that, was a blessing, and that was something I wanted to do when I was a kid. So being able to have the opportunity to do that, I felt relieved.”

In high school, Jeudy’s favorite wide receiver was Amari Cooper, who now plays for the Dallas Cowboys. Jeudy said he enjoys watching receivers who run the best routes and create separation. His favorite is Julio Jones. It’s no coincidence that Cooper and Jones both played college football at Alabama, Jeudy’s alma mater.

Jeudy said he has spoken with new general manager George Paton and he’s looking forward to working with him in Denver. I proposed a hypothetical scenario — if Paton gave Jeudy permission to select one Crimson Tide player in this year’s draft, who would it be?

Jeudy’s pick: DeVonta Smith. Of course!

Jeudy spoke with Broncos Wire as part of a promotion for P&G’s #ThisorThatSBLV TikTok Challenge. The challenge provides Old Spice and Gillette-themed TikTok banners for the viral “this or that” trend.

Jeudy joined the challenge, picking the Kansas City Chiefs to defeat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl LV (but he’s rooting for Tom Brady to upset KC).
