Denver Broncos free agent additions Ronald Darby and Kyle Fuller appear to be the favorites to serve as the team’s outside cornerbacks this fall.
Patrick Surtain II, the team’s first-round draft pick, might have to spend some time in the slot to get on the field with Darby and Fuller as a rookie.
If Surtain plays in the slot, though, where would that leave Bryce Callahan, a versatile veteran who has played at a high level when healthy?
Last month, Broncos coach Vic Fangio was asked if he envisions Callahan playing outside or in the slot this season.
“All of the above,” Fangio said on June 1. “We’ll see how it goes. In this day and age in the NFL, you’re playing a lot of nickel with five and six DBs. If that was all he did, that would get him 70-80 percent of the snaps.
“We know he’s very capable of playing corner [on the outside]. I have a lot of confidence in him to play corner. He’ll be out there somehow, someway.”
Callahan was playing at a Pro Bowl level last year before an injury cut his season short. In 10 games, the cornerback totaled 42 tackles, five pass breakups, two interceptions and one fumble recovery.
Callahan might not get quite as much playing time this year as he did in 2020, but the veteran will have a role in the secondary.
