Broncos want to be 'at least Top 5' in the red zone this season

July 1, 2022 by Broncos Wire

The Denver Broncos had the 11th-worst red zone offense in the NFL last season, scoring a touchdown on just 54.72% of their trips into the opponent’s 20-yard line.

The Seattle Seahawks, meanwhile, even with quarterback Russell Wilson missing three games due to injury, had the third-best red-zone offense in the league in 2021, scoring a TD on 64.58% of their trips past the 20-yard line.

Wilson will now aim to bring that red zone efficiency to Denver, giving a boost to an offense that hasn’t scored enough touchdowns in recent years.

“It’s about touchdowns when you cross that red zone,” Wilson said on May 23. “The whole game is about touchdowns, but especially when you get across that red zone. You want to be the best in the league to be able to do that. That’s a key thing. You want to be at least Top 5 in the league. I think that’s something that’s really important.”

Wilson threw 15 touchdown passes and rushed for a pair of scores in the red zone in 2021. The last year he was healthy for a full season, in 2020, he threw 29 touchdown passes in the red zone, second-most in the NFL, and scored twice on the ground in the red zone.

Denver would love to get that kind of red-zone production in 2022.
