In a recent 2021 NFL mock draft for Pro Football Focus, Michael Renner has the Denver Broncos trading up in the first round with the Detroit Lions to select North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance.
“This isn’t giving up on Drew Lock; it’s admitting he hasn’t been good enough,” Renner wrote on PFF’s website. “Lance isn’t necessarily the guy you want to start Year 1, but he’s got the tools required to open up the Denver Broncos offense.”
It’s hard to imagine the Broncos actually selecting Lance, especially if they have to trade up to get him. If Denver isn’t going to stick with Lock, the team will likely go all in for a top quarterback, not another project.
Lance is talented, and he might already be better than Lock, but if the Broncos are going to groom a QB for the future, it will be Lock. If the team plans to bring in a different QB, that QB will likely be ready to take over the offense right away. Lance doesn’t seem to fit that expectation.
