Broncos' surplus of pass rushers is 'a good problem to have'

July 28, 2021 by Broncos Wire Leave a Comment

Malik Reed led the Denver Broncos in sacks last season, but he won’t be a starter this year if Von Miller and Bradley Chubb stay healthy.

In addition to Miller, Chubb and Reed rushing off the edge, Denver also has interior defensive lineman Dre’Mont Jones (who totaled 6.5 sacks in his second season). With so many productive pass rushers, the Broncos might not be able to get them all on the field at the same time.

When they are on the field, though, Denver’s pass rushers should have no problem generating pressure.

“I feel like it’s going to be so much to go around,” Reed said on June 3. “The better your overall pass rush is, the better your overall defense is. The more opportunities you get to rush the passer and the more third-down opportunities you get, the more ways you can affect the game. With having Von and Chubb and with having a Dre’Mont Jones in there, they have to game plan for that. It makes it tough for guys to key in on them.

“Once you get your one-on-one opportunities, it creates more one-on-one matchups for each person. That’ll create a rise in numbers for everybody around the board. I’m excited to get going. The more pass rushers you have, the better you are. That’s a good problem to have.”

With multiple rushers, the Broncos should be able to keep everyone fresh, and that will lead to good things for Vic Fangio’s defense this fall.
