The Denver Broncos sent running backs coach Curtis Modkins to North Carolina’s pro day on Monday, according to Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports.
The Tar Heels produced two of the top running backs in this year’s class:
Javonte Williams (5-10, 220 pounds) and Michael Carter (5-8, 199 pounds). Williams and Carter were a dynamic duo at UNC, combining to rush for more than 2,300 yards in 2020.
Williams is the third-best RB in this year’s class and Carter is the fourth-best, according to Luke Easterling’s rankings on Draft Wire. Only Alabama’s Najee’ Harris and Clemson’s Travis Etienne are ranked higher.
After parting ways with Phillip Lindsay this offseason, the Broncos appear poised to select a running back in the NFL draft. Melvin Gordon is scheduled to become a free agent next spring and Denver will need to start planning for the backfield’s future.
In related pro day buzz, Broncos quarterbacks coach Mike Shula went with general manager George Paton to Ohio State’s pro day on Tuesday to scout quarterback Justin Fields. Paton also went to the pro days of QBs Trey Lance and Zach Wilson earlier this offseason.
