In his first 2021 NFL mock draft, Touchdown Wire’s Mark Schofield has the Denver Broncos selecting North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance in the first round.
“The NDSU offense puts its quarterback under center and asks him to work through some progression reads on those play-action drops with the back turned to the secondary for a moment or two,” Schofield wrote. “Scouts love to see that, and something tells me [John] Elway will too.”
Lance completed 66.9% of his passes for 2,786 yards with 28 touchdown passes and no interceptions in 2019. He also rushed for 1,100 yards and 14 more touchdowns on the ground.
Schofield has Trevor Lawrence going No. 1 overall to the Jacksonville Jaguars, Zach Wilson going No. 2 overall to the New York Jets and Justin Fields going No. 4 overall to the Atlanta Falcons. An earlier mock draft from CBS Sports had Denver selecting Fields.
The Broncos’ next general manager might not have confidence in Drew Lock, opting to bring in a new QB for 2021 and beyond. If the new GM supports Lock, the QB-to-Denver mocks will stop. Until the new GM is officially hired and makes his opinion known, speculation will continue.
