Broncos safety Justin Simmons wants to stay in Denver: 'I hope it's mutual'

January 13, 2021 by Broncos Wire Leave a Comment

After playing on the franchise tag this season, Denver Broncos safety Justin Simmons is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent in March. During his end-of-season Zoom press conference last week, the Pro Bowl defensive back was asked if he wants to be part of the team’s turnaround in 2021 and beyond.

“I’d love to answer that in depth, it’s just uncertain what the future holds — just being truthful — with this next season,” Simmons said on Jan. 4. “I’ve always talked about wanting to be here. I hope it’s mutual and all that stuff.

“We just have to — I don’t know, see … I just want to choose my words wisely. I’m still a little raw and emotional about the season ending and the game and everything. So, yeah, that’s kind of how I feel about it.”

Simmons has made it clear that he would like to stay in Denver, but he also wants to be paid like one of the top safeties in the league. Simmons declined to answer when asked if he would play under a tag again this year.

“I haven’t had the chance to really sit down and have a conversation with my agent yet, so to your second question, [I] don’t really have an answer.”

Making a decision on Simmons will be one of the top priorities for the Broncos’ next general manager. Giving the star safety an extension would be a good way for the new GM to quickly endear himself to fans.
