The Denver Broncos have downgraded top tight end Noah Fant (ankle) and starting running back Melvin Gordon (illness) to out for Sunday’s game against the New England Patriots. Fant and Gordon were originally listed as questionable on Denver’s injury report.
Gordon has strep throat and did not travel with the Broncos to New England, according to KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis. Phillip Lindsay will start against the Patriots and Royce Freeman will rotate in. Jeremy Cox was promoted from the practice squad Saturday to provide more depth at running back.
With Fant sidelined, Jake Butt will likely serve as Denver’s top tight end on Sunday with Nick Vannett serving as the No. 2 tight end. Rookie tight end Albert Okwuegbunam will have a shot to make his NFL debut after being inactive for the Broncos’ first four games of the season.
If needed, fullback Andrew Beck can also play as a tight end.
