Broncos roster review: wide receiver Damion Willis

July 16, 2021 by Mile High Report Leave a Comment

NFL: Cincinnati Bengals-Training Camp

The Denver Broncos have fifteen wide receivers on the roster heading into training camp. Can Damion Willis fight his way through for a spot on the team in 2021?

The Denver Broncos picked up free agent wide receiver Damion Willis in May after Willis’ practice squad contract expired with the Jacksonville Jaguars. The former undrafted wide receiver out of Troy began his career in 2019 with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Damion Willis’ profile

Height: 6’4”
Weight: 204 lbs
Age: 23 years old
Experience: Third Season
College: Troy

The good

As a rookie, he made two starts appearing in ten games (239 total offensive snaps) and snagged a total of nine catches for 82 yards. His second season was marred by injuries, but ultimately landed on the Jaguars practice squad late in the season.

Going back to his college pro day in 2019, he clocked a 4.48 40-yard dash. He also added a vertical of 33.5 inches. He finished his career at Troy with 56 receptions for 876 yards and 10 touchdowns.

The bad

He was signed by a team with a fairly deep roster at wide receiver. I believe the following guys are locks for the Broncos roster in 2021: Courtland Sutton, Jerry Jeudy, KJ Hamler, Tim Patrick, and probably Tyrie Cleveland. That’s a lot of bodies with a likely roster spot secured this season.

Willis would need to fight through the scrum of 10 other wide receivers currently on the roster behind those five “locks”.

Final thoughts

Willis is also a huge Brandon Marshall (the former-Broncos wide receiver) fan. Marshall was a player Willis tries to emulate in his play.

“He’s my height, but he weighs more than me,” Willis said in 2019. “I like how he played the game, how he was physical and was able to go up and attack the ball.”

If he comes anywhere near Marshall’s physicality and ability to make the touch catch, then he’ll at least make the team on the practice squad. We’ll just have to see how he does in training camp.
