Newly-hired Denver Broncos special teams coach Dwayne Stukes said last month he wanted “attack-minded players” for the third phase of the game, so it’s gotta be music to his ears what rookie Montrell Washington said about scoring touchdowns as a return man last week.
Not only is Washington trying to attack opposing teams by scoring on every return, but he is also a team player. Last week, the Samford product said, “There’s nothing like that feeling because — yeah, I scored — but in my opinion, I don’t score, my team scores. The guys that block for me have to block — they have to risk their body to make just a block.
“Small things — some guys look over that. Me as a returner, that means the most to me. If they make big blocks, that means I have to score. If they make a great block, I have to score. It’s my job to [score] if it’s their job to block. If they’re doing the hard work, my job should be easy. All I have to do is run. I’ll make the most of it for my guys.”
Washington’s philosophy of returning kickoffs and punts can be applied to almost every aspect of life as well. His take is one that makes humanity worth saving. Broncos Country, however, is simply satisfied with Washington’s words of wisdom translating to touchdowns. Or at the least, great field position for Russell Wilson and the offense.
