The Denver Broncos have requested permission to interview New England Patriots assistant director of player personnel Dave Ziegler for their open general manager position, ESPN’s Adam Schefter first reported Tuesday.
It remains to be seen if the Patriots will grant permission because they are expected to lose director of player personnel Nick Caserio to the Houston Texans. After Caserio joins the Texans, Ziegler will be left as the “the next man up for Bill Belichick” in New England, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
Ziegler started his career with the Broncos. He was a college teammate of former Denver coach Josh McDaniels and followed him to the Broncos. McDaniels now serves as the Patriots’ offensive coordinator.
Denver also requested — and received permission — from the Chicago Bears to interview Champ Kelly. He also started his career with the Broncos and now serves as Chicago’s assistant director of player personnel.
Denver is searching for a new GM after John Elway stepped down from the position on Monday. Elway will remain with the team as the president of football operations.
