Broncos QB Teddy Bridgewater takes what the defense gives him

July 18, 2021 by Broncos Wire Leave a Comment

NFL quarterbacks can be too conservative.

Over the last two seasons, Denver Broncos quarterback Drew Lock — at times — has been too reckless.

This year, the Broncos are hoping for a happy medium. Not reckless, but also not afraid to be aggressive. Denver’s new quarterback, Teddy Bridgewater, might be able to help Lock find that happy medium.

“I’m a guy who just takes what the defense gives me,” Bridgewater said on June 15. “When you play this game, you’re going to have your shots when you push the ball, then you’re going to have some plays where it’s conservative. This offseason, I’ve just been trying to complete the football by pushing the ball down the field, crossing them over the field, throwing a shallow cross and throwing it to the back out of the backfield.

“I’m just trying to complete the football because if I complete the ball to our guys, we have a high chance of making a big play. I’m having fun in the process, and I’m just looking forward to finishing this minicamp strong and head into training camp.”

That formula served Bridgewater well during his five-game stretch with the New Orleans Saints in 2019, when he posted an impressive 9-2 touchdown-to-interception ratio. Last year’s TD-to-INT ratio slipped (15-to-11), but he still posted a high completion percentage (69.1%, fifth-best in the NFL).

Protecting the football and completing passes both obviously rank very high on priority lists for quarterbacks. Bridgewater might be able to help the Broncos in those areas this season, either as the starter or as a veteran mentor helping Lock develop.

Whether it’s on the field or on the sideline and in the film room, Bridgewater should prove to be a positive addition to Denver’s offense this fall.
