Speaking at the NFL’s annual meeting in Orlando last month, Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton said veteran Jarrett Stidham would “definitely” get an opportunity to compete for the starting quarterback job this summer.
Four weeks later, Payton traded a sixth-round draft pick to the New York Jets in exchange for a seventh-round pick and quarterback Zach Wilson. Three days after acquiring Wilson, Payton used the 12th overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft to select Oregon quarterback Bo Nix on Thursday night.
That’s quite a crowded quarterback room.
So, how does the depth chart shake out?
Given that he has four years of experience and four career starts on his resume, Stidham will presumably begin training camp as the QB1, but it will likely be a wide-open competition.
Wilson has three years of experience and 33 starts under his belt, but Stidham has a full year of experience in Payton’s offense. It’s possible that Wilson could eventually overtake Stidham on the depth chart, but probably not on Day 1.
As the rookie, Nix will likely begin camp as the QB3 — or maybe even as QB4, depending on Ben DiNucci‘s status going into the summer. Nix is Denver’s quarterback of the future, but he’s going to have to win the job — it won’t be handed to him.
