Broncos offseason roster: No. 31, DB Justin Simmons

July 17, 2022 by Broncos Wire

Broncos Wire’s 90-man offseason roster series continues today with a look at seventh-year safety Justin Simmons, No. 31.

Before the Broncos: Simmons (6-2, 202 pounds) totaled 229 tackles, nine pass breakups, eight interceptions, four fumble recoveries, two forced fumbles and one sack in four seasons at Boston College. Conference coaches voted Simmons second-team All-ACC after his senior season in 2015.

Broncos tenure: Denver picked Simmons in the third round of the 2016 NFL draft. He began his career as a rotational safety, starting three games as a rookie as an injury fill-in. Simmons then won a full-time starting job in his second season and he hasn’t looked back, totaling 465 tackles, 49 pass breakups, 21 interceptions, 3.5 sacks and one defensive touchdown in six seasons. He was named a second-team All-Pro in 2019 and 2021, and he earned a Pro Bowl nod in 2020.

Chances to make the 53-man roster: Simmons is obviously a lock given that he’s one of the most important players on the team. He’s one of the best safeties in the NFL and while his on-field contributions are crucial, his off-field leadership is just as important in Denver’s locker room.
