Broncos offseason roster: No. 30, DB Caden Sterns

July 17, 2022 by Broncos Wire

Broncos Wire’s 90-man offseason roster series continues today with a look at second-year safety Caden Sterns, No. 30.

Before the Broncos: Sterns (6-1, 207 pounds) played three seasons at Texas, totaling 173 tackles (including 8.5 tackles for losses), eight pass breakups, five interceptions and two sacks in 29 games with the Longhorns.

Broncos tenure: Denver picked Sterns in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL draft. As a rookie, Sterns quickly earned a rotational role on defense and contributed on special teams, playing 311 snaps on defense and 121 snaps on special teams last season. He played in 15 games last year and started two games as an injury fill-in, totaling 28 tackles, five pass breakups, two interceptions and two sacks.

Chances to make the 53-man roster: Sterns is a near-lock to make the team and he’s probably going to be the team’s top backup safety behind Justin Simmons and Kareem Jackson. Sterns might also get an opportunity to play in the slot as a nickelback this season. He’ll likely be a candidate to replace Jackson in 2023, so Sterns should get plenty of reps in 2022 to prepare for a larger role in the secondary down the road.
