Broncos Wire’s 90-man offseason roster series continues today with a look at rookie cornerback Damarri Mathis, No. 27.
Before the Broncos: Mathis (5-11, 195 pounds) played four seasons at Pittsburgh, appearing in 49 games (25 starts). In his college career, the defensive back totaled 87 tackles, 19 pass breakups, five interceptions and one pick-six. He’s a candidate to play in the slot as a pro.
Broncos tenure: Denver picked Mathis in the fourth round of the NFL draft in April. He’ll make his Bronco debut during preseason.
Chances to make the 53-man roster: K’Waun Williams appears to be the favorite to play in the slot this year, so Mathis probably won’t see a lot of snaps in the secondary if Denver’s cornerbacks stay healthy. Mathis is likely to make the squad, though, and he’ll probably have a key role on special teams as a rookie. Mathis will then get an opportunity to compete for more playing time on defense in 2023.
