Broncos offseason roster: No. 26, RB Mike Boone

July 19, 2022 by Broncos Wire

Broncos Wire’s 90-man offseason roster series continues today with a look at fifth-year running back Mike Boone, No. 26.

Before the Broncos: Boone (5-10, 206 pounds) signed with the Minnesota Vikings as an undrafted free agent out of Cincinnati in 2018. He went on to spend the first three years of his career with the Vikings and he was productive when given opportunities, averaging 5.5 yards per carry, but he was buried on the depth chart behind Dalvin Cook and Alexander Mattison.

With limited snaps on offense, Boone emerged as a key special teams player in Minnesota, playing 221 special teams snaps in 2019 and 235 snaps in 2020.

Broncos tenure: Denver signed Boone to a two-year deal during free agency last spring. He started his first season with the team on injured reserve with a quad injury. Boone later returned for the final eight games of the year. He rushed four times for 35 yards in 2021 — just like with the Vikings, his biggest role was on special teams (73 snaps).

Chances to make the 53-man roster: Boone will likely make the team again this year as the third-string running back behind Melvin Gordon and Javonte Williams. His role on offense might slightly increase this year, but he’s on the team primarily for his special teams contributions.
