Broncos not expected to have in-person OTAs in 2021

January 21, 2021 by Broncos Wire Leave a Comment

The Denver Broncos didn’t have in-person organized team activities last spring because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Broncos might be forced to hold virtual OTAs again in 2021.

During a call with agents on Tuesday evening, NFL Players Association executive director DeMaurice Smith said the players’ union is “planning for an offseason that looks a lot like [the 2020] offseason,” according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

The NFLPA will “make an assessment in March and April and proceed from there,” Pelissero tweeted on Tuesday. Given that NFLPA president JC Tretter has already campaigned against in-person OTAs, it seems likely that Denver’s players will have to work over Zoom again this offseason.

Broncos safety Justin Simmons was asked about in-person OTAs potentially going away last month.

“I understand this year with the pandemic how that wasn’t accessible, but moving forward, if there is a way, in my opinion, if there is a way to safely have those things for the individual teams, I feel like that is something that we should do because the game’s already hard enough with everything going on,” Simmons said on Dec. 31.

“I think limiting practices and meetings and things of that nature in the offseason would only hurt. Then you also talk about how the NFL guys spend their offseasons, and I think that just causes more area for I guess trouble, but that’s just my opinion.”
