Broncos like Drew Lock, but they will 'definitely' look at QB options

March 20, 2021 by Broncos Wire Leave a Comment

Denver Broncos general manager George Paton has been diplomatic about Drew Lock’s status this offseason.

“We like Drew Lock,” Paton reiterated during a press conference Thursday. That hasn’t stopped the team from poking around the quarterback market. Paton admitted Denver is “monitoring” and evaluating the QBs who are or might become available this offseason.

The Broncos want to add competition at the position, but they’re not going to make a move just for the sake of making a move. Denver had no interest in Andy Dalton and little interest in Ryan Fitzpatrick.

“We have a plan in place and there’s free agency, there’s the draft, there’s trades, there’s a lot of ways to acquire a quarterback,” Paton said. “Fortunately, we have a quarterback here and we have a nice quarterback room. We do want to bring in competition. We are not going to force it. We are monitoring the market right now.”

NFL Network’s James Palmer has reported the Broncos are unlikely to trade for a quarterback if he’s not a drastic improvement over Lock. That might rule out trade candidates like Gardner Minshew, Sam Darnold, Nick Foles and Marcus Mariota, but it wouldn’t rule out Deshaun Watson.

Paton said during Thursday’s presser that selecting a quarterback with the ninth overall pick in the NFL draft remains an option. Paton has already attended Trey Lance’s pro day and he plans to attend more QB workouts.

“I’ll be out a lot looking at all positions [at upcoming pro days], but definitely quarterback,” the GM said.
