Broncos 'left the door open' for possible Kareem Jackson reunion

March 20, 2021 by Broncos Wire Leave a Comment

The Denver Broncos declined Kareem Jackson’s contract option earlier this week, a move that will save the team more than $7 million in salary cap space. That decision doesn’t guarantee Jackson won’t return.

“We had great conversations with his agent. We tried to get something done but we couldn’t,” Broncos general manager George Paton said during a Thursday press conference. “We left the door open for Kareem to come back, but we just couldn’t get something worked out.”

Jackson has also told KMGH-TV’s Troy Renck that the door is “not entirely closed” on the possibility of him returning to Denver. Paton might try to bring Jackson back for less than what the safety’s contract option would have paid him in 2021.

After declining Jackson’s option, safety became a big position of need for the Broncos.

“It’s a priority,” Paton said of the position. “It definitely is but we have a long time. There’s free agency, there’s a lot of safeties on the market, including Kareem, and then we have the draft. There’s also the trade market. The good thing is we don’t play a game for a while. We have a lot of time.”

Jackson will likely test the free agent market before making a potential decision on possibly returning to Denver.
