The Denver Broncos will soon be under new ownership. The Broncos have reached a sale and purchase agreement with Walmart heir Rob Walton for $4.65 billion, pending NFL approval.
Because Walmart is family-owned, the Walton family has accrued enough money to extend their wealth to buy professional sports franchises. As expected, this led to a little bit of ribbing from Broncos kicker Brandon McManus.
McManus jokingly referred to Walmart’s brand when he spoke on the change of ownership, stating Walton and Penner got the Broncos for a “great value.”
“I’d say $4.65 billion was a ‘great value’ that they got the team for,” McManus said with a smile on June 9, referencing Walmart’s “Great Value” brand. “That’s the nature this business is going. In [2018] the [Carolina] Panthers sold, and this is more than double. Baseball used to be America’s game, but I don’t think it’s anywhere close now.
“Football prints money, and it’s going to continue. The salary cap continues to go [up], the TV rights continue to go [up]. Gambling is just getting started. The values of these teams are going to continue to skyrocket, I believe.”
With the sale nearly finalized and jokes aside, the Broncos and McManus have a lot of work cut out for them to prepare for the season.
