After John Elway stepped down from his general manager position last week, the Denver Broncos quickly started the process of vetting GM candidates.
Elway, who is still the president of football operations, is helping in the search for a new GM, as is president/CEO Joe Ellis. Denver interviewed the following five candidates over the weekend:
- Vikings VP of player personnel/assistant GM George Paton
- Bears assistant director of player personnel Champ Kelly
- Patriots assistant director of player personnel Dave Ziegler
- Saints VP/assistant GM of pro personnel Terry Fontenot
- Broncos director of college scouting Brian Stark
Up next for Denver is in-person interviews. The Broncos will likely trim the candidate list down to two finalists before scheduling more interviews.
Paton appears to be the favorite for Denver’s GM opening, but the Detroit Lions are also interested in the Vikings executive. Kelly is also believed to be high on the Broncos’ list of top candidates.
