Broncos GM George Paton will make a decision on Von Miller after meeting with staff

January 19, 2021 by Broncos Wire Leave a Comment

During his introductory press conference on Tuesday, Denver Broncos general manager George Paton was asked when he will begin making some of the “tough decisions” he will face this offseason, including a decision on outside linebacker Von Miller.

“I think all of those tough decisions start when I can meet with the coaches and the scouting staff, and that’s where you get your plan for the offseason,” Paton said. “That’s when it starts. I haven’t been with the coaches yet, I haven’t been with the scouts yet. So until you have your meetings and get your plan for the offseason and you develop your needs and how we’re going to fill them … that’s when it all starts.”

The Parker Police Department recently launched a criminal investigation into Miller. The nature of the allegations is still unknown.

Miller will turn 32 years old on March 26 and he missed all of the 2020 season with an ankle injury. In 2019, the last season he was healthy, Miller totaled eight sacks.

An eight-time Pro Bowler and the MVP of Super Bowl 50, Miller has recorded 106 sacks in his career, the most in franchise history.

Miller has a contract option coming up in March for the final year of his contract. If Denver picks up that option, Miller will have a cap hit of $22.225 million in 2021. If the Broncos don’t pick up the option, the team will take a “dead money” cap hit of $4.225 million with a net savings of $18 million by cutting MIller.

The deadline for Denver to make a decision on the option is March 16.
